Print Dialog |
After you complete your template design, you can print your document by using the Print dialog. To display the Print dialog, click Print on the File menu. Alternatively, click the icon on the main toolbar.
|
To open the Print dialog, press Ctrl+P on your keyboard. |
The Print dialog is a tabbed dialog that contains two or more tabs that you can use to customize your printing environment. After you make the selections that you want, click the Print button to send your print job to the selected printer.
The Test Print button prints a single item and then closes the Print dialog. You are not prompted to enter data even if data entry is enabled for a data source on the template. Instead, the default data for the data source is used. If a data source is configured to be serialized, the same data appears in that field as would appear on the first of a series of printed items.
Click the Preview button to preview your entire print job before you send it to the printer. Note that only those objects that are positioned within the border of the displayed template are printed on your items. By displaying a Print Preview of your job, you can easily verify that all of the objects on your template appear on your items.
The tabs that are available vary depending on the printer driver in use.
The Print tab specifies the printer, the number of items to be printed, and additional print options.
Printer
The Printer section specifies the printer that prints your items.
Name: Specifies the name of the printer. To view additional printers that you can select for the print job, click this field. This field is read-only when you have used the Printer Name Options dialog to specify that the printer name is obtained by using a database field or a data source.
Status: Displays the status of the print job.
Driver: Displays the type of printer that is selected, including manufacturer and model.
Port: Displays the port that is used to communicate with the selected printer.
Location: Displays the location of the printer, which is configured in the Windows Properties dialog.
Comment: Displays any comments that were entered into the Windows Properties dialog for the selected printer.
Document Properties: Opens the Document Properties dialog, where you can specify additional options for the selected printer. Options that are specified in the Properties dialog apply to the current document only. Available for all printers in the Name list except PDF.
Printer Properties: Opens the printer's Properties dialog, where you can access global printer options for the selected printer.
|
You can also access these options by using one of the following methods:
|
Export Options: Opens the Export Options dialog, which you can use to configure document security settings, user permissions, and view options for the PDF output file. Available when PDF is selected in the Name list.
File Location: Opens the File Location dialog, which you can use to specify the file name and location for the saved PDF output file. Available when PDF is selected in the Name list.
Print on Both Sides: Specifies that both the front and back sides of the printer stock are printed on. Available only for printers that support double-sided printing.
Print to File: Saves your print job as a file instead of sending the job directly to the printer. When PDF is selected in the Name list, this option is automatically selected and cannot be changed.
|
If you specified one or more redirect printers on the Printer Setup page of Administration Console, it tries to use the redirect printers first. |
Depending on your printer configuration, the following mini-tabs are also available.
Copies: Specifies the number of copies that you want to print of each document. If you are reading from a database, this setting determines the number of copies that are printed for each record in the print job.
Serial Numbers: Specifies the number of times the template is printed with a changed serial number. The starting data is determined by the contents of the data source that has serialization enabled. The number that is entered in the Serial Numbers field determines the length of the serialization sequence by using the starting data and the settings that are specified in the Serialization dialog.
If you are reading from a database, the Serial Numbers field specifies the number of changed serial numbers that are printed for each record in the print job. Available when serialization is enabled for at least one data source in your template.
Copies per Serial Number: Specifies the number of copies that are printed for each value in the serialization sequence. Available when serialization is enabled for at least one data source in your template.
Opens the Print Quantity Options dialog, which you can use to change the number of copies or serial numbers dynamically through a database, a control on the data entry form, or a VBScript.
Record Selection
Use Database:
Database Connection Setup: Opens the Database Setup dialog.
Queried Records: Specifies which queried records to print.
All: Specifies that all of the records that meet the query criteria are printed.
First Record Only: Specifies that only the first record that meets the query criteria is printed.
Selected: Specifies that of the records that meet the query criteria, only those records that are selected in the Select Records dialog are printed.
Selected At Print Time: Specifies that print-time record selection is used. All records that satisfy the query are available for selection at print time.
Selected Records: Specifies which database records to include in the print job. If you specify the records to be printed by using the Select Records dialog or the Queried Records option, this field is automatically filled in with the records to print.
You can specify a series of records manually by entering the records that you want into the Selected Records field. A series of record numbers can be separated by using commas (for example: 1,3,7). A range of records can be specified by using a hyphen (for example: 1-3). You can specify both a series and a range of records to be printed by using a combination of the two (for example: 1-3,7,8). Furthermore, you can override the Copies setting by using parentheses (for example: 1-3,7,8,9(14),12-40,41-43(14)).
Select Records: Opens the Select Records dialog, which you can use to manually select the records that you want to print.
Repeat data entry until cancelled: Specifies that when a print job is complete, a new print job is automatically run.
Cancel any jobs previously queued to this printer: Cancels all print jobs that were previously sent to the printer at the start of a new print job.
Enable data entry: Displays the data entry form when a print job is run. Available if data entry is enabled for any data sources. For more information about data entry forms, refer to Using Data Entry at Print Time.
Enable Printer Code Modifier: Runs all print code actions and VBScripts that are present in your document.
Show printer code at end of print job: Opens a text editor that displays the printer code after the print job finishes. Available only if the Print To File option is selected.
The Object Print Method tab includes options that specify how objects are printed on a thermal printer when an object type is not directly supported by either the printer or the printer driver. The options that are selected on this tab vary depending on the printer driver that is currently in use.
Settings
Use Settings for All Documents: Specifies that the settings that are specified on this tab apply to all documents that are printed.
Use Settings for This Document Only: Specifies that the settings that are specified on this tab apply only to the currently open document.
Objects
TrueType Text: Specifies whether to print TrueType fonts as Text Output or Raster Graphics. This setting affects how colored TrueType text is printed when the color is not directly supported by the printer, such as when the printer supports red and yellow but the TrueType font is orange. When you select Raster Graphics, the printer dithers (that is, mixes) dots of different colors to produce text of the color that you want. In this example, the printer dithers red and yellow dots to produce orange letters. However, dithered color text can be hard to read, especially with small font sizes. When you select Text Output, the text is printed in the closest directly supported color. In this example, orange text is printed as either red or yellow, depending on how dark the orange is.
Unsupported 1D Barcodes, Unsupported 2D Barcodes: Specifies whether linear (1-D) and 2-D barcodes are printed by using Raster Graphics or Device Lines if the symbology is not supported by either the printer or the printer driver. If this option is set to Auto, the driver determines the best printing method.
Lines, Boxes, and Ellipses: Specifies whether lines, boxes, and ellipses are printed by using Raster Graphics or by using the printer's device settings if they are not supported by either the printer or the printer driver. If this option is set to Auto, the driver determines the best printing method.
By using the options on the Performance tab, you can optimize your printing experience by caching documents and/or graphics to your printer, by using the printer's built-in serialization functionality, and by using the printer's fonts and graphics.
Settings
Use Settings for All Documents:
Use Settings for This Document Only: Specifies that the settings that are specified on this tab apply only to the currently open document.
Printer Optimizations
|
For information about how some less common performance issues are handled, refer to the Printer Setup page of Administration Console. |
Allow Static Graphics:
Allow Static Objects:
Allow Serialization:
Allow Variable Data Optimization: Specifies that the printer's data merge feature is used to store the document's formatting specifications (object positions, symbology, fonts, and so on) so that only object data needs to be transmitted.
Allow Graphics Caching: Specifies that the printer driver uses the storage capabilities in the printer by keeping track of graphics that were previously printed.
Allow Template Caching: Specifies that the printer driver uses the storage capabilities in the printer by keeping track of all templates that were previously printed.
Warn When Using TrueType Fonts:
|
TrueType fonts are transmitted to thermal printers as graphics rather than as downloaded fonts. Because thermal printers can increment data only when it is being handled as a font, a TrueType font cannot be incremented by using the printer's built-in serialization capabilities. If you want to serialize an object on your template and take advantage of your printer's serialization capabilities, you must use one of your printer's built-in fonts. |
To enable printer caching, you must select the Allow Graphic Caching and Allow Template Caching options on the Performance tab of the Print dialog.
Automatic Cache Flushing
Daily:
Weekly:
Monthly:
Never (fastest printing):
Flush Cache Now: Clears the printer's cache.
Manage Cache: Opens the driver's Cache Options dialog, which specifies how the printer's cache is used.
|
Caching does not work well when more than one computer is configured to print to the same printer. |
