Encrypting Documents

Setting up user permissions for your BarTender suite is a very effective security measure, but also consider the following scenarios in which it would be possible for an unauthorized person to modify or print secure documents:

To prevent these scenarios, Administration Console supports document encryption. After a document is encrypted, it is unreadable unless it is accessed by an authorized user on a correctly-configured computer. If encrypted documents are moved to a different computer, they cannot be read unless a copy of Administration Console is installed on that computer and the correct security key is specified. This safeguards the document from deliberate or inadvertent modification.

After you enable document encryption, encryption and decryption occur without requiring user input. You create encryption keys and assign them to documents in Administration Console, and you can specify that when a new or existing document is saved, it is subsequently encrypted with the encryption key that you previously created. Documents are decrypted automatically as they are opened, including when they are printed.

If you lose or delete a key that was used to encrypt a document, you can no longer use that document.
