Creating, Opening, and Saving Documents

A BarTender document is a file that you create and save in BarTender. It is saved on the file system of your choice with the *.btw file name extension. Each document consists of one or more templates and/or data entry forms that you design in BarTender.

There are multiple ways in which you can open and save your documents. You can use the Save As command, save all open documents, save a document in an earlier version of BarTender, or save a print job to a file.

Many sample documents are installed with BarTender in the Seagull\BarTender 2021\Templates sub-directory of the Program Files folder. When you view these sample documents, you can discover the many features and capabilities of BarTender.

After you open a document, you can examine the various dialog settings to determine what features and customization options are available. To open an existing document, click Open on the File menu.

ClosedTemplate

A template is a design area in BarTender where you design the items that you want to print. Each template can have any number of barcodes, pictures, or text objects to give you a true "what you see is what you get" WYSIWYG experience withBarTender.

By default, each document starts with one template (or design), but it is easy to add more. When you use multiple templates, you can print different designs based on the data that is queried from a database or print multiple designs in the same job. (All such templates must have the same dimensions.)

For more information, refer to Template Design View.

ClosedData Entry Form

A data entry form is a user-customizable dialog that appears at print time and prompts a print operator to enter data into objects on the template. Data is entered by using controls such as text boxes, dropdown lists, radio buttons, record pickers, and so on.

For more information, refer to Data Entry Form View.
