Template Design View

The Main Menu bar is the horizontal bar across the top of the screen that allows you to pull down menus. It contains a list of commands to configure and use BarTender. The following menus are available:

• File: Contains options that allow you to load, save, and print the documents that you create and modify by using BarTender.

• Edit: Contains options that allow you to cut, copy, or delete one or more objects from the template.

• View: Contains options that allow you to change the magnification and position of the template on your display and provides easy access to the data entry form's design mode.

• Create: Contains options that allow you to add objects to your template. Depending on the activated edition of BarTender, you may be able to add barcodes, shapes, pictures, text objects, or encoding technologies tags to your template.

• Arrange: Contains options that allow you to organize the layout of objects on your template.

• Administer: Contains options that allow you to set administrative and configuration settings.

• Tools: Contains options that launch other applications in the BarTender Suite and provides access to the User Preferences dialog.

• Window: Contains options that allow you to define and switch between one or more additional views of a template or data entry form.

• Help: Contains options that access help and product information.

The toolbars contain shortcut buttons to some of the most frequently used commands. The following toolbars are available:

• Main Toolbar: Provides shortcuts to many of the most commonly used commands and dialogs in the File and Edit menus.

• Object Toolbar: Provides shortcuts to add objects to your templates.

• View Toolbar: Provides shortcuts to alter the way you view the template.

• Arrange Toolbar: Provides shortcuts to the options on the Align and Rotate dialogs.

• Text Toolbar: Provides shortcuts to the options on the Font property page.

• Line and Shape Toolbar: Provides shortcuts to alter the fill and stroke of line and shape objects.

The Toolbox is a set of panes from which you can drag reusable objects and data sources to make it easier to design your template. It contains the following panes:

• Components: Provides a place for you to create, store, and use preconfigured objects that are used in your template.

• Data Sources: Allows you to easily access objects and data sources in your template.

• Layers: Allows you to easily manage the layers on the template.

The tabs at the bottom of the display provide access to the templates, page template, and data entry forms that are associated with the open document. If you have enabled double-sided printing or are designing multiple templates, then multiple tabs along the bottom of the template are available to help you navigate between the different templates.

• The Template is an editor that allows you to design your items. By using the template, you can position and modify objects, access important information about the size and structure of your items, and gain an on-screen view of what the final item will look like when it is printed. A template tab bears the name that is given to the associated template as defined in the Rename dialog.

• The Data Entry Form is an editor that provides the ability to create forms that allow data entry at print time. For more information, refer to Data Entry Form View.

• The Page Template allows you to add elements to your document, such as a header, footer, or watermark.

The Page Template editor is available only if it is enabled on the Page tab of the Page Setup dialog.

The status bar, found at the bottom of the user interface, displays basic information about the currently selected object, or, when no objects are selected, general information about the document. When an object is selected, the status bar displays the name, position, and size of the object. If there is not an object selected on the template, the status bar displays information about the document itself, such as the printer, page setup, and magnification settings. For more detailed information, you can move your cursor over a section of the status bar to display the appropriate tooltip. The status bar's primary function is to display information about the current document, and you can click a section to open the corresponding dialog. For example, clicking on the page setup section of the status bar opens the Page Setup dialog.

When you hover over an icon on a toolbar or a menu item, the basic document information is replaced with a short description of the highlighted item. This is useful in determining how a specific tool is used or in identifying the tool that corresponds to a particular icon on the toolbar.

In some cases, you may want BarTender to hide the status bar so that it does not appear at the bottom of the application window. To toggle the visibility of the status bar, use one of the following methods:

• From the View menu, click Toolbars, and then select Status Bar.

• From a toolbar's context menu, select Status Bar to show or hide the status bar in the application window.
