Specifying Supplementals

You can specify supplementals by either appending a 2-digit or 5-digit supplemental barcode to an existing UPC or EAN barcode, or by simply creating a 2-digit or 5-digit UPC supplemental barcode as a new barcode object on your template.

Appending a Supplemental to an Existing UPC or EAN Barcode

The data for the main UPC or EAN barcode and the appended supplemental is specified just like the data for any other barcode — either as embedded data, user input in the data entry form, or data read from a database. The only difference is that the data for the main UPC or EAN barcode and the data for the supplemental are both specified in the field for the main barcode. BarTender will automatically take the required number of digits (2 or 5) from the right side of the data string and print them as your supplemental barcode. The remaining digits in your data string will be printed as the main UPC or EAN barcode.

The appearance of the supplemental is specified using the Supplemental Options dialog.

ClosedTo append a 2-digit or 5-digit supplemental to a UPC or EAN barcode

  3. From the list of available property pages, select Symbology and Size.

  4. For the Symbology, select the desired UPC/EAN barcode.

  5. Click the Supplemental button to open the Supplemental Options dialog.

  6. Use the Length and Style options to specify the appearance of your barcode.

  7. Click OK to close the Supplemental Options dialog.

  8. On the Barcode Properties dialog, select the desired data source to open the Data Sources property page.

  9. On the Data Source tab, enter the desired data for the UPC/EAN barcode. Alternatively, set up the data source to read from a database, or obtain its value from the data entry form or VBScript.

Creating a 2-digit or 5-digit UPC/EAN Supplemental Barcode

You can also create supplemental barcodes by selecting "EAN/JAN/UPC 2-digit Supplemental" or "EAN/JAN/UPC 5-digit Supplemental" from the Symbology option's dropdown list on the Symbology and Size property page. However, supplementals created in this manner must be formatted just like any other barcode on the template. You cannot use the Supplemental Options dialog to specify their appearance and BarTender will not automatically place them in the correct position.
