Print Dialog |
After you complete your template design, you can print your document by using the Print dialog. To display the Print dialog, click Print on the File menu. Alternatively, click the icon on the main toolbar.
|
To open the Print dialog, press Ctrl+P on your keyboard. |
Use the tabs in this dialog to customize your printing environment. The tabs that are available vary depending on the printer driver that is in use.
The Print tab specifies the printer, the number of items to be printed, and additional print options.
Printer
The Printer section specifies the printer that prints your items.
Name: Specifies the name of the printer. To view additional printers that you can select for the print job, click this field. This field is read-only when you have used the Printer Name Options dialog to specify that BarTender obtains the printer name by using a database field, a data source, or a data entry form.
Opens the Printer Name Options dialog, which specifies how BarTender obtains the printer name during a print job.
Status: Displays the status of the print job.
Driver: Displays the type of printer that is selected, including manufacturer and model.
Port: Displays the port that is used to communicate with the selected printer.
Location: Displays the location of the printer, which is configured in the Windows Properties dialog.
Comment: Displays any comments that were entered into the Windows Properties dialog for the selected printer.
Document Properties: Opens the <printer name> Properties dialog, where you can specify additional options for the selected printer. Options that are specified in the Properties dialog apply to the current document only. Available for all printers in the Name list except PDF.
Printer Properties: Opens the printer's Properties dialog, where you can access global printer options for the selected printer. Options that are specified in the Properties dialog are available to all documents that are printed from BarTender or any other application. Available for all printers in the Name list except PDF.
|
You can also access these options by using one of the following methods:
|
Export Options: Opens the Export Options dialog, which you can use to configure document security settings, user permissions, and view options for the PDF output file. Available when PDF is selected in the Name list.
File Location: Opens the File Location dialog, which you can use to specify the file name and location for the saved PDF output file. Available when PDF is selected in the Name list.
Print on both sides: Specifies that both the front and back sides of the printer stock are printed on. Available only for printers that support double-sided printing.
Print to file: Saves your print job as a file instead of sending the job directly to the printer. When PDF is selected in the Name list, this option is automatically selected and cannot be changed.
|
When a document is loaded, BarTender looks for a printer that has exactly the same name (including spaces and punctuation marks) as the printer that was selected the last time that the document was saved.
|
Depending on your printer configuration, the following mini-tabs are also available.
Copies: Specifies the number of copies that you want to print of each document. If you are reading from a database, this setting determines the number of copies that are printed for each record in the print job.
Serial numbers: Specifies the number of times the template is printed with a changed serial number. The starting data is determined by the contents of the data source that has serialization enabled. The number that is entered in the Serial numbers field determines the length of the serialization sequence by using the starting data and the settings that are specified in the Serialization dialog.
If you are reading from a database, the Serial numbers field specifies the number of changed serial numbers that are printed for each record in the print job. Available when serialization is enabled for at least one data source in your template.
Copies per serial number: Specifies the number of copies that are printed for each value in the serialization sequence. Available when serialization is enabled for at least one data source in your template.
Opens the Print Quantity Options dialog, which you can use to change the number of copies or serial numbers dynamically through a database, a control on the data entry form, or a VBScript.
Record Selection
Use database: Specifies that BarTender reads information from the databases that are specified in the Database Setup dialog.
Database Connection Setup: Opens the Database Setup dialog.
Queried records: Specifies which queried records to print.
All: Specifies that all of the records that meet the query criteria are printed.
First Record Only: Specifies that only the first record that meets the query criteria is printed.
Selected: Specifies that of the records that meet the query criteria, only those records that are selected in the Select Records dialog are printed.
Selected At Print-Time: Specifies that print-time record selection is used. All records that satisfy the query are available for selection at print time.
Selected records: Specifies which database records to include in the print job. If you specify the records to be printed by using the Select Records dialog or the Queried records option, this field is automatically filled in with the records to print.
You can also manually specify the records that you want to be printed by entering the records in the Selected records field, as follows:
To specify a series of separate record numbers, use commas (for example: 1,3,7).
To specify a range of records, use a hyphen (for example: 1-3).
To specify both a series and a range of records, use a combination of commas and hyphens (for example: 1-3,7,8).
To specify a custom number of copies, use parentheses (for example: 1-3,7,8,9(14),12-40,41-43(14)). This option overrides the Copies setting on the Quantity mini-tab of the Print dialog and is available when you click to select the Allow record selection dialog to override copies check box in the Print Quantity Options dialog.
Select Records: Opens the Select Records dialog, which you can use to manually select the records that you want to print.
Repeat data entry until cancelled: Specifies that when a print job is complete, a new print job is automatically run. This means that you do not have to manually restart a print job when you want to run multiple consecutive print jobs by using the same BarTender document.
Cancel any jobs previously queued to this printer: Cancels all print jobs that were previously sent to the printer at the start of a new print job. Bi-directional communication support with the printer might be required to use this feature.
Enable data entry: Displays the data entry form when a print job is run. Available if data entry is enabled for any data sources. For more information about data entry forms, refer to Using Data Entry at Print Time.
Enable printer code modifier: Runs all print code actions and VBScripts that are present in your document. By default, BarTender automatically uses this option if it detects the presence of print code actions or VBScript modifications. To prevent actions or scripts from running, click to clear this option. For more information, refer to Printer Code Modification.
Open file at end of print job: Opens a text editor that displays the printer code after the print job finishes. Available when the Print To File option is selected.
Save document after print job (if modified): Specifies that when a document has been modified (such as by using serialization), a copy of the document is saved after the print job runs to a location that you specify.
|
This tab is available only when a phrase library is connected to the document and you have used the BarTender Document Options dialog to specify that one or more languages are selected at print time. For more information, refer to Library Phrase. |
This tab displays a table that specifies the document languages that appear in all template designs within the document. A document language corresponds to a set of library languages (that is, languages that are included in a phrase library).
You can use this tab to specify the language that you want to print the associated data sources in at print time. For example, if you have configured one or more template objects to use Library Phrase data sources that are translated into English, Japanese, and German and that share a common document language number, you can use the Languages mini-tab to specify that the data sources that have that language number are printed in Japanese when the print job runs.
The following options are available:
Number: Displays the number of the document language, which corresponds to the set of library languages that are listed in the associated Language list.
Language: Displays the currently selected language, which the associated Library Phrase data sources will be printed in when the print job runs. Click to select a different language.
The languages that are available are determined by the phrase libraries that are associated indirectly with each language number, via Library Phrase data sources.
|
This tab is available only when a verifier device is attached to the printer. For more information, refer to |
Verify printed output: Specifies that when a print job runs, the printed output is verified by the verifier device.
Settings: Opens the Per Document Properties dialog, which you can use to specify the job template that you want to use. Available when the verification process requires additional per-document settings and when the printer driver uses per-document settings.
The Object Print Method tab includes options that specify how objects are printed on a thermal printer when an object type is not directly supported by either the printer or the printer driver. The options that are selected on this tab vary depending on the printer driver that is currently in use.
Settings
Use settings for all documents: Specifies that the settings that are specified on this tab apply to all documents that are printed.
Use settings for this document only: Specifies that the settings that are specified on this tab apply only to the currently open document.
Objects
TrueType text: Specifies whether to print TrueType fonts as Text Output or Raster Graphics. This setting affects how colored TrueType text is printed when the color is not directly supported by the printer, such as when the printer supports red and yellow but the TrueType font is orange.
When you select Raster Graphics, the printer dithers (that is, mixes) dots of different colors to produce text of the color that you want. In this example, the printer dithers red and yellow dots to produce orange letters. However, dithered color text can be hard to read, especially with small font sizes.
When you select Text Output, the text is printed in the closest directly supported color. In this example, orange text is printed as either red or yellow, depending on how dark the orange is.
Unsupported 1D barcodes: Specifies whether linear (1-D) barcodes are printed by using Raster Graphics or Device Lines if the symbology is not supported by either the printer or the printer driver. If this option is set to Auto, the driver determines the best printing method.
Unsupported 2D barcodes: Specifies whether two-dimensional barcodes are printed by using Raster Graphics or Device Lines if the symbology is not supported by either the printer or the printer driver. If this option is set to Auto, the driver determines the best printing method.
Lines: Specifies whether lines are printed by using Raster Graphics or by using the printer's device settings if they are not supported by either the printer or the printer driver. If this option is set to Auto, the driver determines the best printing method.
Boxes: Specifies whether boxes are printed by using Raster Graphics or by using the printer's device settings if they are not supported by either the printer or the printer driver. If this option is set to Auto, the driver determines the best printing method.
Ellipses: Specifies whether ellipses are printed by using Raster Graphics or by using the printer's device settings if they are not supported by either the printer or the printer driver. If this option is set to Auto, the driver determines the best printing method.
By using the options on the Performance tab, you can optimize your printing experience by caching documents and/or graphics to your printer, by using the printer's built-in serialization functionality, and by using the printer's fonts and graphics.
Settings
Use settings for all documents:
Use settings for this document only: Specifies that the settings that are specified on this tab apply only to the currently open document.
Printer Optimizations
|
For information about how some less common performance issues are handled, refer to the Printer Setup page of Administration Console. |
Allow static graphics: Specifies that BarTender uses the printer's static graphics feature to store the specifications for all raster-type graphic objects that are printed out exactly the same from item to item, including TrueType fonts.
Allow static objects: Specifies that BarTender uses the printer's static objects feature to store the specifications for all objects that are printed exactly the same from item to item, whether or not they are raster graphics. This includes printer fonts, barcodes, imported graphics, and TrueType fonts.
Allow serialization: Specifies that BarTender uses the built-in incrementing capabilities of the specified printer whenever appropriate. This option cannot be turned off when you are exporting a printer code template.
Allow variable data optimization: Specifies that the printer's data merge feature is used to store the document's formatting specifications (object positions, symbology, fonts, and so on) so that only object data needs to be transmitted.
Allow graphics caching: Specifies that the printer driver uses the storage capabilities in the printer by keeping track of graphics that were previously printed.
Allow template caching: Specifies that the printer driver uses the storage capabilities in the printer by keeping track of all templates that were previously printed.
Warn when using TrueType fonts: Specifies that when BarTender is configured to print TrueType fonts on a thermal printer, it displays a reminder that TrueType fonts can adversely affect printing speed, particularly when you are using a printer that has a serial printer port.
|
TrueType fonts are transmitted to thermal printers as graphics rather than as downloaded fonts. Because thermal printers can increment data only when it is being handled as a font, a TrueType font cannot be incremented by using the printer's built-in serialization capabilities. If you want to serialize an object on your template and take advantage of your printer's serialization capabilities, you must use one of your printer's built-in fonts. |
BarTender can track items that are stored in the printer. However, some situations, such as a failed print job or a printer replacement, can cause BarTender to determine that certain items were stored in the printer for later reuse when they actually were not. If this happens, BarTender might run a print job and fail to send certain items to the printer because it has determined that the items are already stored there. This can result in items that have missing parts or blank items being printed. Therefore, we recommend that you periodically flush (clear) the printer's cache.
To enable printer caching, you must select the Allow graphics caching and Allow template caching options on the Performance tab of the Print dialog.
After you enable caching, you can instruct BarTender to flush the cache at regularly specified intervals by using the Printer's Cache tab.
Automatic Cache Flushing
Per BarTender session (slowest printing): Specifies that BarTender flushes the printer's cache at the start of the first print job of every session.
Daily: Specifies that BarTender flushes the printer's cache one time at the start of the first print job of the first BarTender session each day, regardless of how many sessions of BarTender you run.
Weekly: Specifies that BarTender flushes the printer's cache one time at the start of the first print job of the first BarTender session each week.
Monthly: Specifies that BarTender flushes the printer's cache one time at the start of the first print job of the first BarTender session each month.
Never (fastest printing): Specifies that BarTender does not flush the printer's cache unless you explicitly click Flush Cache Now.
Flush Cache Now: Clears the printer's cache.
Manage Cache: Opens the driver's Cache Options dialog, which specifies how the printer's cache is used.
|
Caching does not work well when more than one computer is configured to print to the same printer. Therefore, for all copies of BarTender that print to a shared printer that uses caching, you must click to clear the Allow graphics caching and Allow template caching options on the Performance tab of the Print dialog. |
The following options are available at the bottom of the Print dialog:
Test Print: Prints a single item and then closes the Print dialog. You are not prompted to enter data even if data entry is enabled for a data source on the template. Instead, the default data for the data source is used. If a data source is configured to be serialized, the same data appears in that field as would appear on the first of a series of printed items.
Print: Sends the print job to the selected printer.
Preview: Displays a preview of your entire print job so that you can verify that all of the objects on your template appear on your items. Only those objects that are positioned within the border of the displayed template are printed on your items. For more information, refer to Print Preview.
Close: Saves your changes and closes the Print dialog without running the print job.
Cancel: Discards your changes and closes the Print dialog without running the print job.
Help: Opens the help documentation for the dialog.
