BarTender Document Options Dialog

The Information tab displays document metadata, including description, origin, and content details. This metadata is the same information that is available from the Windows properties dialog for the document file.

Some fields in the Information tab are editable. To edit a field, click the text to the right of a description or origin term, and then enter your edits.

The following options are available.

Description

• Title: View or enter a title for your document.

• Description: View or enter a description for your document.

• Categories: View or enter one or more categories for your document. Categories are usually set by your company to better organize types of documents or labels.

• Products: View or enter the names of products that are related to your document.

• Tags: View or edit tags that are related to your document.

Origin

• Author: View or edit the name of the author of this document. You can remove an author from the document by clicking to the right of the author's name. Click Add an author to enter an additional author name.

• Company: View or enter your company name.

• Document ID: View or enter a unique identification tag or number for your document.

• Created: Displays the date and time when the document was created. Read-only.

• Last Modified: Displays the date and time that the document was last modified. Read-only.

• Last Modified By: Displays the name of the user who last modified the document. Read-only.

• Help URL: View or enter a help URL for your document.

Content

• Application: Displays the application edition in which the document was created. Read-only.

• Printer: Displays the printer that prints the document. (You can change the printer in the Print dialog for the current document.) Read-only.

• Template Size: Displays the measurements of the document template. Read-only.

• Templates: Displays the number of templates in the document. Read-only.

• Data Entry Forms: Displays the number of data entry forms in the document. Read-only.

• File Size: Displays the document file size. Read-only.

Use the Comments tab to save a comment about the current document. By using comments, you can give users information about the document, including instructions or detailed information about the purpose of the document.

Users can view comments for the active document on the Comments tab. Alternatively, if you click to select Pop up comments after file open, BarTender automatically displays a Comments dialog each time the document is opened. When you use this dialog, users view or edit the comment and then click OK to continue using the application.

The following options are available:

• Comments for this document: Enter comments for the current document.

• Pop up comments after file open: Opens a separate dialog that displays the comments each time the document is opened.

Use the Preview tab to override a document's default preview image. The preview image appears when you select the document from a File dialog or an external program such as Print Station, Print Portal, or Windows Explorer. By changing the default preview image of the document to an image of your choice, you can easily distinguish between documents that include similarly designed templates.

The following options are available: 

• None: Specifies that BarTender removes the default preview image and replaces it with an icon that represents a generic BarTender document.

• Use preview of first template: Specifies that an image of the first template that is included in the document is used as the preview image.

• Use custom preview image: Specifies that a custom image is used as the preview image for the selected document. To select a custom image, click Select Preview Image to open the Select Picture dialog, and then browse to the image file that you want.

The selected preview image is displayed in the Preview section.

Use the View Options tab to set regional settings for the document, specify the document's ruler and grid settings, and specify whether the template indicates the boundary of any unprintable portion of your items.

The rulers that appear along the horizontal and vertical boundaries of the design area can help you position objects on the template. The current position of the pointer is always indicated by kinetic lines in the horizontal and vertical rulers, which move as you move the pointer over the template.

The following options are available.

Regional Settings

• Units: Specifies the unit of measurement to be used in the current document. You can select inches, centimeters, millimeters, or the Windows system default. This setting affects all options that are related to a measurement of horizontal or vertical distance, such as the height of a barcode, the distance of the human readable characters from a barcode, and the position of an object on the template.

• Decimal Symbol: Specifies the character that is used as the displayed decimal character. You can select point (.), comma (,), or the Windows system default.

• Reading Order: Specifies the reading order for all edit boxes in the user interface.

• Windows Settings: Opens the Windows Region dialog.

Rulers

• Divisions per <unit>: Specifies the number of division marks per unit of measure on the rulers (where <unit> is inch, centimeter, millimeter, or the system default). You can specify anywhere from one to one hundred divisions per unit.

• Snap to Object or Ruler: Specifies that the alignment of moved or resized objects snaps to divisions on the ruler, to other objects, and to the boundaries and center lines of the templates and forms themselves.

Grid

The rulers are supplemented by a grid system that displays a specified number of grid points (dots) or lines within the design area. The grid can be very helpful when you need to precisely position and resize objects on the template or data entry form.

• Divisions per <unit>: Specifies the number of equally spaced grid points or lines that appear for each unit of measure in the grid (where <unit> is inch, centimeter, millimeter, or the system default). You can specify anywhere from one to one hundred divisions per unit.

• Snap to Grid: Specifies that the alignment of moved or resized objects snaps to divisions on the grid.

• Show Grid: Specifies that the grid in the design area is displayed.

• Grid Color: Displays the currently selected color of the grid points or lines when the grid is visible. To select a different color, click this option, and then use the Color Picker to select the color that you want. For more information, refer to Color Picker.

• Grid Style: Specifies how the grid appears when it is visible in the design area. Options include the following: 

• Points: Displays only the intersection points of the grid by using dots.

• Crosses: Displays only the intersection points of the grid by using crosses.

• Solid Lines: Displays the grid by using solid lines.

• Dashed Lines: Displays the grid by using dashed lines.

• Dotted Lines: Displays the grid by using dotted lines.

The following options that appear on the View Options tab also appear as icons on the view toolbar: Snap to Object or Ruler Snap to Grid Show Grid

• Show Unprintable Region: Specifies whether the boundary of the unprintable region of an item is indicated on the template by using a light dashed line.

Use the Scripting tab to enable document-level script events, select an event, and edit the event in the Visual Basic Script Editor. You can use script events to process document-level operations or perform custom object updates during printing.

The following options are available: 

• Enable document-level script events: Specifies that document-level script events are available.

• Select an event to edit: Select a document-level event, and then click Edit to open the Visual Basic Script Editor.

The Actions tab includes options for document-level actions and printer code modifier functionality that can be integrated with BarTender documents.

The following options are available.

Document Actions

• Enable document-level actions: Specifies that document-level actions are available.

• Document Actions: Opens the Document-Level Actions page, where you can specify and configure the actions that you want to run.

Printer Code Modifier

Use printer code modifier functionality to modify printer code before it is sent to a printer or exported as a printer code template.

• Search and Replace: Opens the Search and Replace (Printer Code Modifier) dialog, which you can use to search and change print code.

• Script: Opens the Visual Basic Script Editor, which you can use to make more complex modifications to the print code.

• Test: Opens the Test Printer Code Modifier dialog, which you can use to test the actions and VBScript on real printer code in a file.

The Languages tab includes options that specify the languages that you can translate template objects into at print time. These settings are available when you connect the document to a phrase library and add a Library Phrase data source to a template object. For more information, refer to Library Phrase.

The following options are available:

• Number of Languages in Document: Specifies the number of document languages that appear in all template designs within the document. A document language corresponds to a set of library languages (that is, languages that are included in the phrase library). Change this number as needed to accommodate all the languages that you want and to add rows to the languages table.

• Languages table: Specifies the languages in the document. The following options are available:

• Number: Displays the numbers of the document languages. These numbers correspond to the numbers that appear in the Language list on the Data Source tab of the Object Properties dialog for a selected template object that is connected to a Library Phrase data source.

• Language: Displays the language. To change the language, click the ellipsis (...), and then select the language that you want in the Select New Language dialog.

• Select at Print-Time: Specifies that the language is made available at print time to be selected by using the Languages tab of the Print dialog or by using data entry form controls that are connected to a Language data source.
