Checking Out a File |
When you want to edit a file that is stored in the Librarian repository, you must first check out the file. This process marks the file as writeable on your computer. When you check out a file, the following things happen:
The latest revision of the file is downloaded to your computer.
In Librarian, the file is marked as checked out.
Other users cannot check out or edit the file until you check it back in.
Checking out a file from Librarian is similar to checking out a book from the library. After you check out a book, you can take it out of the library to read it. Another library patron cannot check out the book until you return the book, and the library staff checks it back in. If you accidentally tear a page of the book, the next patron receives the book "as is," tear and all.
Similarly, when you check out a file from Librarian, you prevent others from editing the file. When you check the file back in to Librarian, other users have access to the file together with all of the changes that you made to it.
To check out a file from Librarian
After you check out a file from Librarian, other users have restricted access to the file and cannot make any modifications to it. To grant other users access, the file must be put back into the repository. To do this, use one of the following methods:
Check In: Retains any changes that were made to the file while it was checked out. The file is saved as a new revision in Librarian.
Undo Check Out: Reverses the Check Out operation and discards all changes that were made to the file while it was checked out.

When you click Undo Check Out, all changes that were made to the file while it was checked out are permanently lost. To save changes to a file, use the Check In option. |
