Due to the defined specifications for barcode symbologies, BarTender may not accept certain data input for your barcode. If an input contains excessive, insufficient, or invalid characters, the barcode will show a red 'x' over it, and a description of the error type will display when you place the mouse over the barcode.

These error messages will appear for all UPC/EAN/JAN, GS1 Composite, GS1 DataBar, Interleaved 2-of-5, ITF-14, MaxiCode, and Micro QR barcodes. On all other barcodes, invalid characters will simply appear as a series of zeroes. To that end, it is important to note the restrictions of the symbology in use when selecting the data source, as some symbologies may be better suited to display that data than others.
