Understanding Documents and Templates

Creating items with BarTender is very simple. Using your mouse and the toolbar and menu options, you can design templates with barcodes, pictures, and text. The collection of multiple templates, along with an optional data entry form, is called a BarTender document.

Keep in mind if you are designing a template, the document does not need to be saved in order for it to be printed. However, it is always a good idea to save the file as a BarTender document if you plan to print similar items in the future.

Using Documents Installed with BarTender

Because designing templates on your own may be time consuming, a number of standard template designs can be installed using the BarTender installation package. Any of these documents can be further modified to match your item requirements. Alternatively, if one is close but doesn't quite match, you can modify it rather than starting from scratch. These documents can be found in the BarTender/BarTender Documents sub-directory of My Documents.

Viewing the supplied documents in BarTender can be an easy learning resources to discover the many features and capabilities of the application. After you have loaded a document, you can examine the various dialog settings to determine what features and customization options are available. To open an existing BarTender document, select Open from the File menu.

Printer Default Settings

Regardless of the printer setting you may have saved with one document, when you begin designing a new template, BarTender automatically uses the printer currently set as your Windows default printer. Consequently, the settings in the Page Setup will automatically format to the default settings for your default printer. For example, you may be working on a template formatted to print on a thermal printer, but your default printer is a laser printer. When you start from scratch designing a new template, the size and dimensions of the template will be determined based on the default page size and margin settings for the laser printer. If you want to set the document to print on another printer, you can change the printer setting in the Print dialog.
