File Location Dialog |
Use the File Location dialog to specify how the path and file name are determined for the location where the PDF output file is saved. At print time, the path and file name can be selected manually or generated automatically.
To open this dialog, click File Location on the Print tab of the Print dialog. The following options are available:
Select at print time: Specifies that at print time, the Print to File dialog is displayed, which the print operator can use to specify a path and file name to save the output file to.
Generate file name: Specifies that at print time, the path and file name where the PDF output file is saved are generated automatically. The following options are available:
Folder: Specifies the folder in which the output file is saved.
File Name: Specifies the file name of the PDF printer's output. This name can consist of text that you enter manually and/or one or more print-time variables. To use variables for the file name, you insert the name of the variable's source, and the variable's actual value is determined and used automatically at print time.
To use text for the file name, enter it in the File Name field. To add print-time variables to the file name, click the File Name field in the location where you want the variable to appear in the output file name, click , and then select the variable source in the list that you want, as follows.

When the BarTender document has one or more named data sources and/or one or more attached databases, all the permissible named data sources and database field names are displayed when you click , so you can easily insert the ones that you want in the File Name field to create the PDF output file name. |
<Document Name>: Specifies that the file name of the BarTender document (without the file name extension) is used in the PDF output file name at print time.
<Named Data Source: data source>: Specifies the named data source whose print-time value is inserted in the PDF output file name at print time.
<Database Field Name: field name>: Specifies the database field name whose print-time value is inserted in the PDF output file name at print time.
You can manually enter variables if you know the names of the named data sources and/or database field names that you want. Be aware that if BarTender does not recognize the manually entered names at print time, the Print To File dialog appears during the print job and displays the unrecognized variables so that you can correct the output file name. |
When File Exists: Specifies what you want to happen when a file exists that has the same path and file name as the file that is being saved. The following options are available:
Make Unique: Specifies that a serialized number is appended to the file name for the new file.
Overwrite: Specifies that the existing file is replaced with the new file.
