Global Data Field

The Global Data Field data source retrieves a global data field that was previously created and saved to the BarTender System Database. Because global data fields are stored in a network location, they can be shared with multiple documents and even with multiple installations of BarTender that are connected to the same system database.

ClosedTo create a text object that has a Global Data Field data source

  1. In the Toolbox, click the Data Sources tab to show the Data Sources pane.

  2. If necessary, expand the Global Data Fields node to display the available Global Data Field data sources.

  3. Drag the Global Data Field data source that you want from the Data Sources pane to the location on the template where you want the object.

You can configure the properties of this data source by using the Data Sources property page of the Object Properties dialog. You can identify a Global Data Field data source in the navigation pane of the Object Properties dialog by the icon. For more information about the properties that you can specify for the data source, refer to Data Sources Property Page.

On the Data Sources property page for a Global Data Field data source, many of the properties are read-only because they are properties of the global data field itself and are specified by using the Global Data Fields dialog. If you change the global data field's data source properties on the Global Data Fields dialog, all documents that are linked to the global data field are affected.

You can also replace an existing data source with a Global Data Field data source or add a Global Data Field data source to an object's already existing data sources. For more information about how to do this, refer to Configuring Data Sources.
