The Aztec Code symbology supports 98 levels of error correction, with 1 percent being the least thorough and 99 percent being the most. The percentages refer to the percentage of characters in the data layers that are check digits, although there are always three additional check digits above the percentage level that you set. Additionally, if the last data layer is not completely filled, more check digits are automatically created to ensure that the barcode is a perfect square.

By default, the error correction level for Aztec Code is set to Auto. This means that the correction level consists of 23 percent check digits, three check digits, and any additional check digits that are needed to fill out the last data layer.
If you use the Aztec Code symbology in a closed system (that is, you control both the printing and the scanning of the symbol) and you have a high degree of confidence in your system's printing and reading capabilities, you might successfully reduce the printed size of your symbols by manually specifying a low correction level. However, if your system's print quality is questionable, if your barcodes are subject to damaging conditions in the field, or if you know that a variety of scanning equipment might be used to read the symbol, you might want to manually specify a higher correction level, even though a larger printed symbol will result.
