Working with Translated Phrases

You can use phrase libraries that include translated phrases as Library Phrase data sources in several ways to add translated content to your template designs.

When you work with translated phrases as data sources, you must configure the language sets that you want to use in the document. These language sets correspond to the languages that are included in the phrase libraries that your document is connected to. You can use one language set (if you want to print all the data-sourced objects on the template in only one language, which you can change at print time) or more than one language set (if you want to print the data-sourced objects in different languages on the same template, whether you want to change that language at print time or not.)

The following procedures describe the various configurations that you can use.

ClosedTo configure Library Phrase data sources to be printed in a single language that is not your Windows default language

  1. Connect your document to a phrase library that contains translated phrases.

  2. ClosedTo connect the document to a phrase library

    1. On the Data Sources pane of the Toolbox, right-click Libraries, and then click Connect to an Existing Library.

    2. In the Connect to a Library dialog, click Browse to browse to and open the Data Builder database that contains the phrase library that you want.

    3. In the Library list, select the library that you want, and then click Add to connect to the library.

  3. On the File menu, click BarTender Document Options to open the BarTender Document Options dialog.

  4. On the Languages tab, make sure that the Number of Languages in Document option is set to 1.

  5. Under Language in the table, your Windows default language is displayed for the "Number 1" language set. For this set, you must specify the other language in the phrase library that you want to use when the document is printed. To do this, click the ellipsis (...), and then select the language and locale that you want in the Select New Language dialog.

The language and locale must match the language and locale that are specified in the phrase library.

  6. Leave the Select at Print-Time check box unselected.

  7. Click OK to close the BarTender Document Options dialog.

  8. Add a text object that uses a Library Phrase data source to the template. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Drag the phrase library from the Data Sources pane of the Toolbox to the location on the template where you want to place the text object. Alternatively, create a text object on the template, and then drag the phrase library that you want to the object.

    2. In the Select a Phrase dialog, select the phrase that you want, and then click OK.

The phrase that is specified by the Library Phrase data source appears in the language that you specified in the BarTender Document Options dialog.

ClosedTo configure different template objects to print phrases in different languages

  4. On the Languages tab, add the language sets that you want to include in your document design. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Use the Number of Languages in Document field to specify the number of document language sets that you want to use in the document. A document language set corresponds to a set of library languages (that is, languages that are included in the phrase library).

Each document language set is associated with one or more Library Phrase data sources, and each Library Phrase data source is associated with a phrase library. The languages that are defined in the associated libraries determine the possible values for each document language set.

If you are printing in only one language at a time, then only one document language set is needed. Otherwise, define multiple document language sets as necessary. (For example, if you have two objects whose phrases you want to print in two different languages on one template, set this field to 2.) The number should not exceed the number of languages in the phrase library.

    2. Under Language in the table, click the ellipsis (...) for the first document language set to open the Select New Language dialog, and then select the languages that you want for that language set.

Make sure that you select the correct language and locale. Only those languages that exist in the phrase library will be available to select in the Print dialog at print time.

    3. Click to select the Select at Print-Time check boxes for each language set that you want to be able to select a different language for at print time. If you leave a check box blank, the corresponding document language set does not appear in the Print dialog at print time (step 6).

    4. Click OK.

  5. Add objects that support text to your template, and then configure each one to use a Library Phrase data source.

You can use the same phrase for more than one object.

For more information, refer to Adding Phrases from a Library to a Document.

  6. On the Data Sources property page of the Object Properties dialog for each object, use the Language list to select the language that you want the object to be printed in when the print job runs. The options that include the phrase "selected at print-time" are the languages that you configured in the BarTender Document Options dialog to have the option to select a different language at print time. Close the Object Properties dialog.

  7. Click to open the Print dialog. The actions that you take in this dialog depend on whether you selected the Select at Print-Time check box in the BarTender Document Options dialog, as follows:
