Layer Security

You can easily lock a layer in a template by clicking the button in the Layers pane of the Toolbox to prevent the layer from being edited by accident. However, the layer can be unlocked just as easily by clicking the button. In environments where this behavior is unwanted, you can create a document password to protect layers in all documents from unauthorized changes.

ClosedTo prevent modification of a layer by using password protection

  1. In the Layers pane of the Toolbox, click the layer that you want.

  2. In the layer preview image, click to lock the layer.

  3. On the File menu, click BarTender Document Password.

  4. Enter the password that you want in the New Password field.

  5. Re-enter your password in the Confirm Password field.

  6. Optionally, enter a Password Hint. Otherwise, leave the Password Hint field blank.

  7. In the Protected Actions list, click to select the Modify Layers check box.

  8. Optionally, click to select the Remember Document Password Until Close check box.

  9. Click OK.

After you configure the password, locked layers require a password to be unlocked. The password is required to access the Layer Properties dialog for all layers or to change the order of layers.

Users can still manipulate the size, location, and quantity of all objects for unlocked layers. Additionally, they can add new objects to those layers without having to enter the password.

ClosedTo limit modification of a template to a specific region of a label

  1. After you configure a password lock by using the previous procedure, click on all layers that need to be locked, entering the password as needed.

  2. In the Layers pane of the Toolbox, double-click the layer that you want to leave open. Alternatively, use the secondary mouse button to click the layer, and then click Properties. The Layer Properties dialog appears.

  3. In the Print Options tab of the Layer Properties dialog, click to select the Clip objects to bounding rectangle check box.

  4. Specify the position of the rectangle by using the Left and Top fields.

  5. Specify the dimensions of the rectangle by using the Width and Height fields.

  6. Click OK to confirm the change.

When you use this configuration, users who do not have the password can edit only the area within the rectangle.
