Many scales can measure and distinguish between a gross weight, a tare weight, and a net weight:

• Gross weight: The combined weight of an item and its packaging.

• Tare weight: The weight of an item's packaging, excluding the weight of the actual item itself.

• Net weight: The weight of an item, excluding the weight of its container and/or packaging.
