A database is a collection of information that is structured in such a way that it relates categories of data to each other. In BarTender, you can connect a document to a database and then specify the data that you want to use to populate objects on your template. At print time, a printed item is produced for each individual record in your database that meets your specified criteria.

Consider the following scenarios:

• You want to print multiple items, and some of the data changes on each item that is printed.

• All of the data that you need to print on your items is contained in a database or spreadsheet.

• The data that you need to print is automatically created by an external application.

In all of these cases, the most efficient way to print the data is to connect the BarTender document to an existing database on your computer and then import the information from the database into your template at print time.
