Encrypting Documents |
Setting up user permissions for your BarTender suite is a very effective security measure, but also consider the following scenarios in which it would be possible for an unauthorized person to modify or print secure documents:
A user copies documents from a computer on which Administration Console is configured to an unsecured computer.
A user installs another copy of BarTender elsewhere on the network but does not install Administration Console on that computer.
To prevent these scenarios, Administration Console supports document encryption. After a document is encrypted, it is unreadable unless it is accessed by an authorized user on a correctly-configured computer. If encrypted documents are moved to a different computer, they cannot be read unless a copy of Administration Console is installed on that computer and the correct security key is specified. This safeguards the document from deliberate or inadvertent modification.
After you enable document encryption, encryption and decryption occur without requiring user input. You create encryption keys and assign them to documents in Administration Console, and you can specify that when a new or existing document is saved, it is subsequently encrypted with the encryption key that you previously created. Documents are decrypted automatically as they are opened, including when they are printed.

If you lose or delete a key that was used to encrypt a document, you can no longer use that document. |
Follow specific instructions for creating and deleting encryption keys, assigning encryption keys to documents, and removing encryption from documents.
Use the options on this page to add and delete document encryption keys, specify automatic document encryption when you save documents, and access the BarTender Document Encryptor dialog.
BarTender Document Encryptor Dialog
Use this dialog to assign encryption keys to existing documents, change encryption keys for documents, and remove encryption from documents.
Add Document Encryption Key Dialog
Use this dialog to create an encryption key that can then be applied to BarTender documents.
