Code Set

Code 128 barcodes can be encoded by using one of three character sets, known as code sets. Code set A includes uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Code set B includes uppercase and lowercase letters, ASCII characters, and numbers. Code set C contains numeric characters only.

The following options are available:

Auto: Specifies that BarTender automatically uses the most efficient code set with which to begin the barcode and automatically switches between character sets as needed.
A: Specifies that BarTender encodes the entire barcode by using code set A.
B: Specifies that BarTender encodes the entire barcode by using code set B.
C: Specifies that BarTender encodes the entire barcode by using code set C. Not available for HIBC versions of Code 128.
Auto A: Similar to Auto except that BarTender uses code set A for any sequence of characters that are included in both code set A and code set B.
Prefer C: Similar to Auto except that BarTender uses code set C until it must switch to code set A or B because it encounters a non-numeric character or encodes an odd number of numeric characters. Available only for GS1-128.

Manual: Specifies that the user must provide all information, such as the initial code set and any changes in the barcode. The supported code set and function control characters are listed in the following table. Not available for HIBC versions of Code 128.

^A	Switch to code set A.
^B	Switch to code set B.
^C	Switch to code set C.
^S	Shift code set for the next character only (from A to B, or from B to A).
^1	Function code FNC1.
^2	Function code FNC2.
^3	Function code FNC3.
^4	Function code FNC4.
