Code 49

Code 49 is a continuous, variable length stacked symbology developed by Intermec Corporation. It combines some of the characteristics of UPC and Code 39 into a single barcode language. Developed in 1987, it was the first stacked barcode symbology, and supports the use of the full 128 character ASCII set.

Code 49 contains 2 to 8 rows stacked on one another, with 8 ASCII characters in each row. Multiple rows are separated by a horizontal bearer bar. Each row also consists of leading and trailing quiet zones, start and stop characters, and a row check digit. The data input is encoded in exactly 18 bars and 17 spaces.
