GS1 QR Code

A variant of Denso's QR Code, GS1 QR Code is designed specifically for sharing extended packaging information, such as lot number, product ID, and quantity. A GS1 QR Code symbol always begins with the Function Code 1 (FNC1) character and uses application identifiers to separate different types of data within the barcode.

GS1 QR Code inherits its symbology structure, error correction capabilities, and dimensions from QR Code.

ClosedThe Character Sets and Modes

GS1 QR Code is capable of encoding data in the follow three character sets:

It is possible to manually switch between modes in a single barcode by encoding the appropriate mode change command as listed below.

Unlike QR Code, GS1 QR Code does not support Kanji characters, so ^K will not function to manually change modes.

ClosedApplication Identifiers

Every GS1 symbol contains one or more application identifiers, in addition to the data that it encodes. An application identifier is a sequence of characters that relates a data string to a physical or logical thing, such as an item number, serial number, or due date.

Each application identifier tells the user what type of data follows; additionally, each one defines the length and data format of that same data string. Some application identifiers specify data fields containing a fixed number of characters, while others specify a variable length data field.

While GS1 QR Code can encode any of the application identifiers, it must begin with the AI (01) for GTIN and AI (8200) for the Extended Packaging URL before any other application identifiers.

The GS1 Application Identifier Data Source Wizard provides a simple way to attach a specific type of data source to your GS1 barcode.
