About Client Printing Compatible Models

Configuring client printers requires that you match your client printer to a printer or print driver model on the web server. This ensures that when you print a document, the print code that is generated for the document on the web server is compatible with your client printer, so that when the client printer receives the print code, it can print the document.

When you are configuring your client printer, the Compatible Printer Selection page of the New Printer Wizard allows you select a printer or print driver model that is installed on the web server that you feel is compatible with the client printer model that you are configuring. You may need to consult your printer's manufacturer prior to client printer configuration to determine an appropriate compatible model that can be installed on the web server.

ClosedDefining default compatible models

If you have many printers and/or print drivers connected to your web server, and especially if many are from the same manufacturer as the client printer being configured, selecting the most appropriate compatible model can be challenging. To simplify the selection process during client printer configuration, default compatible models can be specified on the Print Settings property page. Subsequently, when a user is configuring a client printer, the default compatible printer model for the client printer will be automatically selected when the New Print Wizard reaches the Compatible Printer Selection page.

The default compatible models are matched to client printers using either a wildcard or regular expression. For example, suppose you have many users who are connected to client printers of various models from the "XYZ" manufacturer. You can install on your web sever a single "XYZ" printer or print driver model that is compatible with the majority of client "XYZ" printer model possibilities that will be encountered. Once it is installed on the web server, you could define the wildcard expression "x*" to automatically match client printer "XYZ" models with the compatible "XYZ" printer model on the web server.
