Entering Function Characters

Function characters are characters in a barcode that perform a function, rather than print a character. For example, the FNC1 character can be used in GS1 barcodes to separate multiple data strings, particularly when combining multiple Application Identifiers and their data strings into a single barcode. Occasionally, the specifications for an Application Identifier may require that other function characters be entered into the barcode data string as well. Double-click on the barcode that you want to modify to open the Barcode Properties dialog. Alternatively, select Properties from the object's context menu.
On the Symbology and Size property page, select GS1-128 as the symbology.
Select the desired data source from the Navigation Pane.
In the Embedded Data field on the Data Source tab, enter the characters for your data string. To specify the function character, simply enter the "^" (caret) character followed immediately by the appropriate number for your function character. For example, enter "^1" for the FNC1 character.
