Mask

Many barcodes are less reliably read when there are broad areas of all light or all dark modules or if there is a pattern of modules that duplicates the position detection pattern that is located in three corners of the barcode. Accordingly, a feature of some two-dimensional (2-D) barcodes is the ability to mask a hard-to-read symbol with an easier-to-read symbol that can be read and translated to the original barcode data.

There are many different mask schemes, but it is strongly recommended that you use the default setting of Auto. This setting enables BarTender to compare how all eight masking schemes will affect your barcode and to use the most readable mask as measured by a standard that is specified in the official barcode specification.
