Show Start/Stop Characters

Show Start/Stop Characters is a symbology-specific option that is only enabled for the following symbologies: Code 39 - Full ASCII, Code 39 - Regular, and Codabar.

The Show Start/Stop Characters option on the Human Readable property page allows you to specify whether or not to display the start and stop characters in the human readable characters of your Code 39 or Codabar barcodes.

For Code 39 - Full ASCII and Code 39 - Regular

It is common to refer to the start and stop characters for Code 39 (they are actually the same character) as an asterisk. Some users like them displayed in the human readable characters, while others just like the data portion of the barcode message to be displayed. The only real advantage to displaying the asterisks is that it allows for a quick, visual determination of whether or not Code 39 is in use. A user printing both Code 39 and another barcode symbology might find this feature useful.

The default setting for BarTender is not to print the start and stop characters for Code 39 - Full ASCII or Code 39 - Regular barcodes. If you do want the human readable representation of the start and stop characters to be printed with your barcodes, click on the check box to activate the option.

For Codabar

Since BarTender's default setting for this option is disabled, the start and stop characters normally will not be printed with the other human readable characters in your Codabar barcodes. If you would like BarTender to print the start and stop characters with your Codabar barcodes, just click on the check box to activate the option.
