While truncating a PDF417 symbol results in a smaller symbol, it does decrease decode performance and the ability to withstand noise, damage, degradation, dust, etc.

When space is an issue and symbol damage is not likely, PDF417 symbols can be truncated. Enabling the Truncated option results in a Compact PDF417 symbol, where the right row indicators are omitted and the stop pattern is reduced to a one module width bar. Removing these components reduces the non-data overhead from 4 codewords per row to 2 codewords per row.
