The UPC-E symbology is made up of eight digits. The first digit is either a zero or a one, the next six digits are your data, and the last digit is the check digit. The Number System option allows you to specify whether you want the first character to be a zero or a one.
Specifying the Right Number of Characters
Normally, you supply the six middle characters of a UPC-E barcode, and BarTender automatically adds the number system digit to the beginning and computes the check digit and adds it to the end. However, if you supply more than six characters, BarTender may delete the extra characters. If you supply less than six, BarTender will add enough trailing zeros to bring the total number of data characters up to six.
