Guard Bars

The UPC/EAN/JAN standards include specifications for some of the bars in the barcode to extend below the main body of the barcode. These bars are known as guard bars and they serve as reference points for scanning devices. In a "standard" full-sized code, the main body of the barcode is .900" tall, and the guard bars extend another .065".

If your UPC/EAN/JAN barcodes are of a different height, you may need to adjust the overhang of the guard bars in order to keep them properly proportioned relative to the rest of the barcode and the human readable text below the barcode.
