Start/Stop Characters

The start and stop characters of a barcode symbology are used to identify the beginning and end points of the symbol. The start and stop characters are not transmitted with the barcode and are not included in any check digit calculations.

Codabar (NW-7)

For a Codabar symbol, you may change either or both characters to a, b, c, d, or Set by Data Source. The default setting for both the start character and the stop character is a.

When Set by Data Source is selected, BarTender accepts the character that is read from the data source associated with the symbol (for instance, embedded data or a database field).

Code 39

You can set the start and stop characters for Code 39 - Full ASCII, Code 39 - Regular, and Circular Code 39 symbols. You may change either or both characters to *, Set by Data Source, or None. The default setting for both the start character and the stop character is *.

Telepen

For a Telepen symbol, you can change the start character to _, Set by Data Source, or None. The default setting is _. You can change the stop character to z, Set by Data Source, or None. The default setting is z.
