Mask

Many barcodes are less reliably read when there are broad areas of all light or all dark modules, or if there is a pattern of modules that duplicates the Position Detection Pattern located in three corners of the barcode. Accordingly, an additional feature of some 2D barcodes is the ability to "mask" a hard-to-read barcode with an easier-to-read barcode that can be read and translated back to the original barcode data.

There are many different mask schemes, but it is strongly recommended that you use the default setting of Auto. The latter setting enables BarTender to (1) compare how all eight masking schemes will affect your barcode, and (2) use the most readable mask as measured by a standard specified in the official specification of the barcode.
