Layer Security

You can easily lock a layer in BarTender by clicking the button in the Layers pane of the Toolbox, thus preventing the layer from being edited by accident. However, the layer can be just as easily unlocked by clicking the button. In environments where this is undesirable, you can assign a password to protect layers from unauthorized changes.

ClosedTo prevent modification of a layer by using password protection

  1. In the Layers pane of the Toolbox, click the layer that you want.

  2. In the layer preview image, click the button to lock the layer.

  3. On the File menu, click BarTender Document Password.

  4. Type the password that you want in the New Password field.

  5. Re-type your password in the Confirm Password field.

  6. Optionally, type in a Password Hint. Otherwise, leave the Password Hint field blank.

  7. In the Protected Actions list, click to select the Modify Layers check box.

  8. Optionally, click to select the Remember Document Password Until Close check box.

  9. Click OK.

After you configure the password, locked layers require a password to be unlocked. The password is required to access the Layer Properties dialog for all layers or to change the order of layers. Users can manipulate the size, location, and quantity of all objects within unlocked layers; additionally, they can add new objects to those layers without needing to input the password.

ClosedTo limit modification of a template to a specific region of a label

  1. After you configure a password lock by using the previous procedure, click the button on all layers that need to be locked, entering the password as needed.

  2. In the Layers pane of the Toolbox, double-click the layer that you want to leave open. Alternatively, open the context menu of the layer, and then click Properties. The Layer Properties dialog appears.

  3. In the Print Options tab of the Layer Properties dialog, click to select the Clip objects to bounding rectangle check box.

  4. Define the position of the rectangle by using the Left and Top fields.

  5. Define the dimensions of the rectangle in the Width and Height fields.

  6. Click OK to confirm the change.

With this configuration, only the area within the rectangle can be edited by users who do not have the password.
